Following the mass mortality of Ostrea edulis, some experiments were conducted with O. chilensis broodstock and spat coming from Chiloe Island (Chile). Concurrently, spat of th same species produced in a hatchery was cultivated. After a small period of growth, these oysters died during the summer. Microscopic observations showed Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae in the oysters' tissue. For these reasons, Ostrea chilensis has not been retained to temporarily replace O. edulis. |

A cytoplasmic dsRNA virus, rotifer birnavirus (RBV), has recently been isolated from the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and is associated with a high mortality rate. Histologically, the viral lesions consist of characteristic inclusions, particularly amorphous dense bodies containing occluded particles. Purified virions are about 59 nm in diameter, single-shelled and display four capsomers per edge. The purified virions have a buoyant density of 1.290 (full particles) and 1.250 (empty particles) in CsCI gradients. Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. Observées dès 1969 dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron (Comps, 1970), les différentes phases du cycle de Marteilia refringens, parasite de la glande digestive de l'huître plate Ostrea edulis, ont été confirmées ultérieurement par une étude en microscopie électronique (Grizel, Comps, Bonami, Cousserans, Duthoit, et Le Pennec, 1974). Toutefois, la contamination expérimentale de sujets sains n'ayant pu être menée à bien, des doutes subsistaient quant à la possibilité pour le parasite de réaliser son cycle intégralement chez l'huître (Grizel et Coll., 1974), l'hypothèse d'un hôte intermédiaire ayant même été envisagée (Balouet, Chastel, Cahour et Poder, 1979). |

Abnormal mortalities of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, have been monitored in June 1979 in some farms of l'Ile Tudy. The examination of these oysters with light and electron microscopy showed different forms of an intracellular parasite localized in the connective tissue of the gills and the digestive gland. It is also detectable in the blood vessels and the stomachal epithelium. Numerous parasited oysters showed distinctive branchial damages (perforations, indentations) visible through macroscopic examination. Virus infections have been associated with major diseases of oysters of the genus Crassostrea. These infections include gill necrosis virus and hemocytic infection virus diseases of the Portuguese oyster C. angulata and more recently the oyster velar virus disease affecting larval, hatchery-reared Pacific oysters C. gigas. From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. A year after the end of the Gill disease which heavily struck the Portuguese oysters Cassostrea angulata Lmk. (Marteil, 1968), a new disease whose causes are still unexplained caused a massive mortality in the same species in the summer of 1970 (Comps, 1972). It can be considered, in 1973, that the successive losses lead to the quasi-extinction of the species C. angulata in the farms of the Marennes basin, since, contrary to what has been done in the case of the Malpèque disease in Canada, the indigenous specious was replaced by another species, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg. |

Until recently, the study of the pathology of oysters concerned some bacterial and a large number of parsitic diseases. Among the latter, diseases caused by fungi such as Labyrinthomyxa marina or by sporozoa such as Minchinia nelsoni in the American oyster have had very important econimic repercussions in the affected areas.
