An infection of Ruditapes decussatus (Bivalvia) by Rickettsia ArchiMer

The authors report the presence of a Rickettsia in Ruditapes decussatus from natural populations of the Algarve (Portugal). Light microscopic shows infections of varying importance in gill tissues. Some enclose small procaryotic colonies (cp) scattered in all lamellae; in others, the colonies are scarce and hypertrophic (100 mu m). These different pictures suggest an amplification process. Digestive diverticulae may also be infected, but to a lesser extent. The ultrastructural features of this intravacuolar (mvd: densified vacuolar membrane) procaryote (P) and its multiplication by scission without a complex developmental cycle allows its classification in the order Rickettsiales.

A la suite de contrôles effectués à l'arrivée en France de Crassostrea gigas importées du Japon, de Corée et de Colombie Britannique, Marteil (1968) signalait chez ces huîtres la présence au niveau des branchies de lésions identiques à celles observées chez Crassostrea angulata Lmk. présentant les symptômes de la maladie des branchies décrite par L. Arvy et A. Franc (1968).

Bilan des essais d'acclimatation d'Ostrea chilensis sur les cotes de Bretagne. ArchiMer

Following the mass mortality of Ostrea edulis, some experiments were conducted with O. chilensis broodstock and spat coming from Chiloe Island (Chile). Concurrently, spat of th same species produced in a hatchery was cultivated. After a small period of growth, these oysters died during the summer. Microscopic observations showed Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae in the oysters' tissue. For these reasons, Ostrea chilensis has not been retained to temporarily replace O. edulis.

Biophysical and biochemical properties of an unusual birnavirus pathogenic for rotifers ArchiMer

A cytoplasmic dsRNA virus, rotifer birnavirus (RBV), has recently been isolated from the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and is associated with a high mortality rate. Histologically, the viral lesions consist of characteristic inclusions, particularly amorphous dense bodies containing occluded particles. Purified virions are about 59 nm in diameter, single-shelled and display four capsomers per edge. The purified virions have a buoyant density of 1.290 (full particles) and 1.250 (empty particles) in CsCI gradients. Four major structural polypeptides of Mrs 60K, 52K, 33K and 27K were detected by SDS-PAGE. Caractéristiques des mortalités estivales de l'huître Crassostrea gigas dans le bassin d'Arcachon ArchiMer

Summer mortalities in the Pacific oyster in the Bay of Arcachon were analysed during four years (1981 to 1984). Mortalities occur mostly among one year old oyster and affect the whole bay, with different prevalence. The phenomenon occurs at certain times during the summer spawning period and is associated with high temperatures. A thinning of the digestive tubule epithelium is observed, but there is no evidence of infectious disease. The failure to find a causative agent, pollution or pathogen, tends to strengthen a physiological disorder hypothesis, related to environmental conditions. Observées dès 1969 dans le bassin de Marennes-Oléron (Comps, 1970), les différentes phases du cycle de Marteilia refringens, parasite de la glande digestive de l'huître plate Ostrea edulis, ont été confirmées ultérieurement par une étude en microscopie électronique (Grizel, Comps, Bonami, Cousserans, Duthoit, et Le Pennec, 1974). Toutefois, la contamination expérimentale de sujets sains n'ayant pu être menée à bien, des doutes subsistaient quant à la possibilité pour le parasite de réaliser son cycle intégralement chez l'huître (Grizel et Coll., 1974), l'hypothèse d'un hôte intermédiaire ayant même été envisagée (Balouet, Chastel, Cahour et Poder, 1979).

Abnormal mortalities of flat oysters, Ostrea edulis, have been monitored in June 1979 in some farms of l'Ile Tudy. The examination of these oysters with light and electron microscopy showed different forms of an intracellular parasite localized in the connective tissue of the gills and the digestive gland. It is also detectable in the blood vessels and the stomachal epithelium. Numerous parasited oysters showed distinctive branchial damages (perforations, indentations) visible through macroscopic examination. The epidemiological monitoring carried out on the Norman and Breton coast revealed the presence of this parasite in a large number of flat oyster farms. Epizootic diseases of oysters associated with viral infections ArchiMer

Virus infections have been associated with major diseases of oysters of the genus Crassostrea. These infections include gill necrosis virus and hemocytic infection virus diseases of the Portuguese oyster C. angulata and more recently the oyster velar virus disease affecting larval, hatchery-reared Pacific oysters C. gigas. From 1988 to 1989, a study has been conducted pertaining to the growth of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis, as well as Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae outbreaks. Commercial mono specific farming (flat oysters), with low density or mixed (flat and hollow oysters) along with higher density, has been taking place in the Arcachon basin oceanographic sectors, where main hydrobiological parameters were acquired simultaneously. The excellent growth of the flat oyster was witnessed in mono specific farming. However this growth was average in mixed farming, probably due to higher total oyster density and interspecies competition. Since the beginning of the epizooty of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis on the Atlantic coast (Comps, 1970), it has been observed that the parasitosis did not develop in the Mediterranean Sea in oysters from the Thau lagoon even though a large part of the culture is made up of young oysters from Brittany. However, some episodic studies only rarely found the presence of Marteilia refringens in the oysters from the lagoon.

The fine structure of the different stages of the life cycle of a new Marteilia, parasite of the pelecypod Scrobicularia piperata has been studied. Ultrastructural study of a parasite first reported in 1978 in Korea, in the oocytes of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas then reported again in 1984 in Chungmu Bay oysters. The observed stages are typical of those of the Paramyxea Levine 1980 group. The development consists of the production of secondary cells within a stem cell; these secondary cells then producing one tertiary cell. The specific evolution of the sporogenesis leading to the production of one single tricellular spore per sporont distinguishes the studied parasite from other Paramyxea

Etude ultrastructurale d'une haplosporidie parasite de la palourde Tapes decussatus L. ArchiMer

The existence of a Haplosporidie parasite in the clam Tapes deucussatus has been demonstrated by Vilela (1950) with the description, based on classical histology observations, of a new species: Haplosporidium tapetis Vilela. Recently, the examination of the histological sections of the digestive glands of some clams from the Thau lagoon helped the scientists to find, in the stomachal epithelium, some forms comparable to the plasmodium of H. tapetis and to precise their ultrastructure.

Evolution de la mortalité des huîtres portugaises C. angulata dans le bassin de Marennes ArchiMer

A year after the end of the Gill disease which heavily struck the Portuguese oysters Cassostrea angulata Lmk. (Marteil, 1968), a new disease whose causes are still unexplained caused a massive mortality in the same species in the summer of 1970 (Comps, 1972). It can be considered, in 1973, that the successive losses lead to the quasi-extinction of the species C. angulata in the farms of the Marennes basin, since, contrary to what has been done in the case of the Malpèque disease in Canada, the indigenous specious was replaced by another species, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg.

Until recently, the study of the pathology of oysters concerned some bacterial and a large number of parsitic diseases. Among the latter, diseases caused by fungi such as Labyrinthomyxa marina or by sporozoa such as Minchinia nelsoni in the American oyster have had very important econimic repercussions in the affected areas. The causes of some severe epizooties, such as the "Malpecue Bay disease" in Canada, have never been determined; in other cases, including the mass mortality of the Portuguese oyster in Fance, several years of investigations have been required before the first results of an etiologic nature were obtained.
